an innovative design

The Active Church solar project began when a local residential solar company approached us with a mission: help the church lower its rising energy costs and reinvest those savings back into its community. Through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Sunrock, the church was able to transition to solar with no money out of pocket—a powerful example of how renewable energy can be both financially sustainable and community-focused.

One of the most innovative aspects of this project was the design itself. During the planning stage, we proposed arranging the panels to form a cross, complementing the church’s-stained glass and central cross window. To further enhance its presence, we incorporated remote-controlled LED lighting, allowing the crosses to glow beautifully at night—turning a functional solar system into an inspiring visual statement of faith and sustainability.

savings into the community

The greatest challenge came with navigating the Net Energy Metering (NEM) 2.0 deadline with Southern California Edison. The application and approval process stretched over a year, significantly delaying construction. Once approved, our EPC partner, JDC Energy, stepped in to execute the installation. Their team delivered exceptional workmanship, ensuring the system met the highest standards of safety, performance, and reliability.

Today, the solar system not only offsets the church’s energy use but also generates meaningful savings that are redirected into ministry, youth programs, music, staffing, and community support. Instead of watching utility costs rise year after year, the church is now empowered to reinvest in its people and mission. This project demonstrates how solar can be more than just an energy solution—it can be a catalyst for community growth, creativity, and inspiration.
